"Good Golf Is
Alignment Golf, Poor Golf Is Position Golf"
Quote By Homer Kelley
"The Golfing Machine"
is a book which became published in 1969 following
28 years of scientific
research and analysis by an engineering aid named
Homer Kelley. Quite
simply, this book is like no other. How does it differ?
1. It was the first book
to reveal why and how the universal Laws of motion - Physics and
Geometry - apply to the golf swing. Thus it is
based on scientific facts,
not opinions
2. It offers in-depth
explanations, not descriptions, of how the golf
swing can function.
3. It is an instructional manual,
not a "do it my way" book.
4. It offers flexibility,
by explaining how the golf club can be swung many different ways
by utilizing various body movements.
It does not emphasize a one-dimensional
theory.
There are many ways to improve your level of play in golf,
but you have to agree that hitting fairways and greens improve
your scoring potential greatly. And that requires a consistent,
mechanically sound golf swing. Unfortunately, many amateurs
don't possess the key fundamentals in their swing to qualify as
such, due to years of misinformation and misapplied theories.
Before you can acquire a consistent, sound golf swing, you must;
(1) understand and comprehend what
factors determine such a swing and
(2) incorporate those changes while complying with your own
natural physical abilities and tendencies.
And that is the essence of "The
Golfing Machine". It not only offers
explanations to what, why, and how every move in the golf swing
can be performed, it allows the flexibility to pertain to all
golfers - regardless of physical size, build, or ability. The
240 page book is categorized in the following manner;
(1) The 12 basic positions and motions which every golf
stroke must pass through (i.e. the address position, top of the
backstroke, impact, etc)
(2) The actions of the body, the arms, and the hands during
those 12 basic positions and motions. And
(3) the 24 separate actions in the golf swing which can be
properly executed in more than one way (i.e. the various grip
positions, address positions, shoulder turns, hip turns, hand
actions, etc...)
So, as you can see, following 28 years of research, analysis,
and testing, "The Golfing Machine truly is an "instructional
manual" for any golf swing. Not only does it explain
what factors constitute a consistent, sound golf swing, it
supplies you with the reasons "why". And knowing "why" you are
doing something in your swing is not only a key ingredient in
the learning process, it is something most other books leave
out.
As stated earlier, the book is expressly based around the
Laws of Physics and Geometry. Let me explain its importance.
As we all know, everything on this planet
must adhere to the Laws of Physics.
That is a scientific fact that neither you, nor I, or anyone
else can deny. When you swing a golf club, your physical
movements propel the golf club through the air, and strikes an
object - the ball. To you and I it may be "just
swinging a club and hitting a ball". In reality,
there's much more happening that that. When swinging the golf
club, it is responding to two things:
the forces your hands are placing on the
grip, and the Laws of Physics. In addition,
since the path of the clubhead is swung in a circular fashion,
the shapes and lines of Plane Geometry also must apply, and
comply with the Laws of Physics. So what does this all mean?
Well, if the club responds solely to the forces of the hands and
the Laws of Physics apply to it, then we can learn a lot about
the golf swing through the study of those two particular groups
of actions.
That's precisely what "The Golfing
Machine" does. It explains the Laws of Physics
and Geometry, how they apply to the golf swing, and
how to use them to your advantage.
It explains the role of hand action in the swing, how the hands,
arms, and body compliment and comply with one another, and how
to utilize them for various desired results as well. It's a
very effective approach to learning and understanding how the
golf swing functions; concentrating on what really matters in
the golf swing, and how to utilize those things to your
advantage. The end result is a thorough understanding of what
creates a powerful, repeating golf
swing which anyone can attain.
How many "self-taught" amateur golfers do you know would like
to acquire a more consistent, powerful swing? Loss of distance,
thin or fat shots, or misdirected shots are all symptoms of a
golf swing that doesn't possess key fundamentals.
It is through the proper application of
mechanics, not muscle, that produces power and consistency in
the golf swing.
We stated above that all players need to acquire basic
fundamentals, while complying with your own natural, physical
abilities and tendencies. Let me explain, I think we would all
agree that
(A) we are all physically built
differently,
(B) we all have certain physical
"tendencies", or styles in swinging the club, and
(C) we all have different swing
speeds and tempo.
Consequently we all have different faults and/or
limitations in our swings, thus, we all need different
remedies to consistently get the club in the proper position at
Impact, which is the paramount objective. The proper golf swing
utilizes the rotary action of the hips and torso, the vertical
action of the arms, and the hinging of the wrists. To improve
your swing, you may need to adjust any one, or all, of these
movements differently from other golfers. My point is this; "do
it my way" books or videos typically emphasize that (1) a
certain part of the body should be dominate during the swing,
and (2) there is a certain, set order of movements the body must
make. Thus, they can be too one-dimensional, not allowing the
flexibility needed to properly meet the needs of the many
various swing types and/or physical ability of millions of
golfers. Whether you're tall or short, thin or stocky, strong
or weak, flexible or not, you can acquire a consistent,
mechanically sound golf swing! But again, it requires a
different set of "adjustments" for each individual golfer.
It makes little sense to try and adopt a new golf swing which
calls for either
(A) the elimination of perhaps one of your natural tendencies
(B) the emphasis of one of your main faults, or
(C) to perform something beyond your physical capabilities.
Consequently, although many of these books and videos offer
valuable advise, they obviously may not be helpful to all
golfers.
Contrarily, "The Golfing Machine" doesn't emphasize that a
certain part of the body be dominate, nor does it recommend how
and when to utilize the other components which comprise the golf
swing. In great detail, it explains how and why the golf swing
functions, what the crucial factors are, how to utilize the Laws
of Force and Motion to your advantage, and offers flexibility by
explaining the many variations the body can be utilized to
achieve certain result.
Background On Homer Kelley
Mr. Kelley spent over 40 years of his life researching the
golf swing and the science involved in it. The physics,
geometry, and biomechanics that produce motion, direction and
balance.
In 1941 an engineering aid from Seattle, Washington had a
problem. He was playing very good golf, shooting in the
seventies, in his very first year of playing golf. Golf is
supposed to be more difficult than this, he was told, so he
wanted to know why he was playing so well. He talked to several
golf pros who taught the game but none gave him satisfactory
answers. Being a scientist at work and at heart he knew there
had to be answers. So he began what he figured to be a one week
project mapping out the "science" of the golf swing.
Twenty-eight years later
he finished his project. A wonderfully complete study of why
the ball goes where it does, how the club moves to make it fly
long and straight or short and crooked, and what the human body
must do to get the club to move in this manner.
This study was published in a book, and has been updated 5
times since. It has long been acknowledged as
THE most complete study on the way the golf
swing actually works. It has ALL the answers with its 241
pages!
Every golf pro who has
searched high and low to uncover or discover the mysteries of
the swing and found the ANSWERS, have all wound up in the same
place - this little yellow book!
"The Golfing Machine",
by the late Homer Kelley,
is one of the most fascinating and thorough books ever written
about the game of golf. It also has become something of a cult
classic, with both devotees and detractors praising and debating
its merits in every corner of the world. As controversial as it
is interesting, Kelley's book was first published in 1969 after
28 years of diligent research, observation and testing, often by
hitting balls into a small net he set up in his studio in
Seattle, Washington. He continued his research for another 12
years, (a total of 40 years) until he died addressing the
Georgia Section PGA."
